Cátedra Sérgio Vieira de Mello — UFG offers free psychological care for immigrants and refugees
In the current global scenario, where more than 114 million people have been forced to relocate, according to 2023 data from The UN Refugee Agency — UNHCR, the concern for the mental health of migrants becomes urgent. More than alarming statistics, these numbers highlight the need for policies and assistance services aimed at rescuing the identity and psychological well-being of these people.
The Cátedra Sérgio Vieira de Mello — UFG recognizes this demand and has two volunteer psychologists, Pâmela Oliveira and Silva Costa, to provide the necessary psychological support to migrants. Aware of the scarcity of resources available to this audience, Pâmela and Silva set out to fill this gap, recognizing not only the diversity of contexts, cultures, and languages but also some issues that may be characteristic of migration itself.
Like the Ulysses syndrome, identified by psychiatrist Joseba Achotegui, which represents a significant challenge, characterized by chronic and multiple stress. The symptoms highlight the need for a holistic approach to assisting migrants, emphasizing the importance of specialized psychological support.
The professionals emphasize the importance of considering the uniqueness of each individual in their current context, respecting their cultural references, and adapting care strategies as needed. This approach not only welcomes but also empowers migrants in their process of rebuilding their lives.
The CSVM initiative to offer free and individualized psychological care, as well as community meetings, is essential for establishing a bond of trust and ensuring access to mental health services. The Cátedra's work, combined with community support, plays a crucial role in promoting the well-being of migrants. In the face of the challenges encountered, such as language barriers and lack of institutional support, initiatives like that of the Cátedra Sérgio Vieira de Mello assume a vital role in building a more inclusive and welcoming society.
